Over a period of five winters, ZMI performed a complete
refit on this 1966 Columbia 34. When the present owner
purchased the boat he brought it to us for winter storage
and assessment of her condition. Working together we
created a refit wish list, and then prioritized the
items, dividing them over several seasons.
SANCTUARY has had a complete renewal, inside, on deck,
and below the waterline. ZMI modified main cabin seating
converted the quarter berth to a nav. station, upgraded
the galley layout and equipment, and repainted and refinished
the interior.
ZMI installed a new electrical system, new electronics,
and replaced all seacocks and thru-hulls. We removed
the old Atomic Four gas engine, and installed a Westerbeke
30B3 diesel.
Like many older cored construction boats, SANCTUARY
has serious structural problems in her deck. We removed
the outer laminates in panels, and removed and replaced
the deteriorated core material. The skins were then
re-attached and laminated in place. After completing
this critical structural work, we painted the deck and
cabin with AwlGrip® paint.
The hull below the waterline had blisters, so we peeled
the damaged laminate away and restored with new laminate
using vinylester resin. We finished the bottom with
InterProtect barrier coat, and multi year anti-foulant.
Finally, we refinished the hull above the waterline
with AwlGrip®.
This proven Wirth Munroe design sails wonderfully and
has become a unique classic. SANCTUARY now looks and
feels like a new boat.
